August 3rd is “Grab Some Nuts Day”.
It hasn’t been entirely decided which “nuts” they are talking about but I am going to go with the theme of the ones that we eat.
There are 11 types of nut trees, yup 11!
So what makes a nut, an actual nut?!
Believe it or not there are different “families” of what we classify nuts to be; botanical nut, drupes, and legumes.
In addition to these botanical nuts, fruits and seeds, there are other nuts that fall into another description and sometimes paired with the following families above. They are called culinary nuts.
Woah, wait, I thought a nut was a nut; peanuts and tree nuts. WHAT THE HECK IS A DRUPE?!
A true nut, botanically speaking, is made up of a hard-shell pod that contains both the fruit and the seed of the plant, causing the fruit not to open to release the seed to the world.
Examples of botanical nuts are chestnuts, hazelnuts & acorns.
Okay, so again, what the heck is a drupe?
A drupe, is a type os fruit in which the outer fleshy part that surrounds the shell (the pit) with a seed inside.
Some examples would be peaches, plums, cherries - BUT walnuts, almost and pecans are also drupes.
We just eat these the other way around, the pit instead of the fruit!
What about peanuts?!
Did you know peanuts are neither a nut or a seed? They are actually a legume, part of the pea family! They grow underground on a vine instead of a tree.
Now, what about these other nuts , culinary nuts.
They are typically used in a wide variety of edible roles, including baking, snacks & flavoring.
Confusing? Okay, let me break it down for you. Listed below are our most common “nuts” broken down into nice “little” categories with a benefit, omega ratio (6:3) and allergy info!
