June 21st is National Junk Food Day!
Let’s celebrate! I mean, there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of junk food here any there, especially if you practice a healthy, flexible dieting lifestyle!
However, sometimes we find ourselves “junking out” a little too much. This is when the weight gain comes into play and we find ourselves falling off track. Don’t worry! You don’t have to!
There are still so many ways for you to enjoy and satisfy that “junk food” craving without sacrificing your waistline.
Cheetos → Home-popped Popcorn
Cheetos are just one of those things that you can’t have just one of! That delicious faux cheese that coats your fingertips pulls you back in for one more bite. However, why not pop your own popcorn and add a little bit of Kernels Seasons to flavor it!
Chips & Dip → Salsa & Homemade Veggie Chips
So you’re watching your favorite tv show and you open up a bag of chips and creamy french onion dip, no biggie! 20 minutes later you hitting the end of the bag with dip running your shirt, trust me we’ve all been there. How about grabbing some fresh salsa and making your own Root Veggie Chips. In a time crunch? Just try using raw veggies!
Cheesecake → “Cheesecake” Parfait
Craving something creamy and sweet, cheesecake is the go-to! Why not reach for something a little sweeter? Grab a bowl, some non-fat Greek Yogurt and top it with fresh berries and a sprinkle of graham crackers. BOOM! Cheesecake in a bowl. OR, even better, check out Say Cheese and indulge in one of their healthy cheesecakes. Serving size, ONE!
French Fries → No so greasy Fries
Every time you drive past a fast food establishment the first two things you smell are burgers & fries. What’s not to love about those two smells?! This not so healthy side dish can come backed with trans fats, blood sugar spikes, and the list goes on and on). However, most restaurants offer “healthier” sides like sweet potato fries or baked potato wedges. Obviously your better bet is just to order a plain baked potato or sweet potato, but what if you’re craving french fries? You’re in luck, there are so many other vegetables out there that can almost TOP a regular fry.
Potato Chips → Kale Chips
Crunchy and salty, the mighty fried potato strikes again! Next time you’re craving salt why not try your hand at homemade Kale Chips? You can add so many flavors and spices to them, you’ll never know the difference or possibly ever want to go back to the potato chip!
Here’s a recipe for a Simple Kale Chip for you to follow and season as you wish!
Chocolate Chip Cookies → Raw Cookie Dough & Healthier Options
It’s hard to top the OG of junk food, the classic CC Cookie. What about licking the bowl of the raw dough after scooping out a fresh batch homemade? See that, right there, that’s my downfall. Well guess what, YOU CAN HAVE BOTH! Check out these two recipes for a Single Serving Raw Cookie Dough Bowl and a Protein Raw Cookie Dough Bowl. Now, onto the REAL thing. You can swap out 1/4-1/3 of your flour in your batter with protein powder. You can make other healthy swaps like using coconut sugar, avocados, apple sauce, and even veggies like sweet potatoes and pumpkins to lessen up the calorie count!
Starbursts, Skittles & Twizzlers → Dried Fruit & Homemade Candy
Chewy, sweet, and tangy, ugh! Such an amazing combo right? The iconic candies we munched on as kids, straight from the candy machine. Now just having a few won’t blow your diet, but the ingredients can be a little scary sometimes. Instead of chewing for days on these babies, why not reach for some no sugar added, sulfate free dried fruit! Just beware, the calories can add up on those too. Another option is to make your own!
Well there you go! Some healthier options do those everyday junk food cravings.
But for July 21st, indulge a little and enjoy your favorite junk food!
